Emergency Action Alert : Help Defend and Preserve the United Nations of Hip Hop...5 Pointz (NYC)

6/20/2013

30 Comments

5 Pointz represents the living embodiment of the global Hip Hop culture and has an intangible value in this world and physical significance to the City of New York. Through its connection with graffiti, which is one of Hip Hop’s 5 original elements 5 Pointz has a living historical and cultural value, serving as a global beacon of unity, hope and creativity and should be preserved as a NYC landmark.

Global Block believes that 5 Pointz represents the following 4 criterion for preservation status:

- Represents a masterpiece of human creative genius and the rich tradition of New York City Arts.

- Represents an important interchange of human values, over a span of time within NYC dedicated monumental arts and landscape design;

- Bears a unique and exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition which is living or which has disappeared;

- Is directly and tangibly associated with living traditions, ideas, and beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance.

If you agree that 5 Pointz should be preserved as a NYC Landmark and converted into a protected Hip Hop/ Urban arts and educational museum and institute, then please join in this movement now!

Hey guys, Is it possible to make it an online application? That way it can be filled out online with out having to 1. download it 2. Then scanning it back in 3. To then be attached 4. And then e-mailing it back to you. By making it an online application you eliminate 3 steps, and then we can/will get a lot more feedback and responses.

You're right, we've been looking for an effective "ad free" form. Do you have any suggestions for us? We can get it up on the site asap. Thanks.

this dude is absolutely right - I wont even try to sign it now - because of the may steps - Use change.org - that will help make it appeal to the masses.

PEACE (and hurry) godspeed

Peace. Mr. Marinko, change.org as with most other similar sites are for petitions. This process that we are current engaging is a legal battle for "landmark" designation from the City of New York. Hence, the extra steps are required for the forms to be officially, physically, submitted to the appropriate commissions. Sorry for the inconvenience but 5 pointz isn't a pop up thing and the fight to preserve and protect it won't be easy either. Still open to suggestions for another platform that can give us the legal actual form. Peace.

This thread and process is independent of email harvesting services that use digital signatures for hype purposes only. We are not requiring any email or subscription to our network to get the form. Our interest is in promoting this step, which requires individually filled out NYC Landmark Applications, not online petitions in the first place.
In light of the building being buffed, white washed, we are asking that people continue to take the time and send back the form by Nov 30. Peace...

There is an error with regarding Urban Graffiti as a part of Hip Hop. It's the reverse. The trains were completely bombed before there was Hip Hop. Common sense dictates this. In the movie Saturday Night Fever, the only Disco really being played was The Bee Gees, etc; and the trains were bombed. Also, the movie The Warriors, the trains were bombed. But, there was no Hip Hop, just Rock N Roll. People started getting confused when movies like Style Wars came out. It gave the impression that Hip Hop and Graffiti went hand in hand and that is simply not true. Then comes Wild Style and Beat Street to add more to the confusion. Yes, some Hip Hopers were into Graff. But, Urban Graff was around way before Hip Hop was even thought of. During the 70's, when the trains were getting bombed inside and out, NY's favorite radio station was 77 WABC AM and Hip Hop was not even heard of. They only played Rock, Pop and a little Motown and a few hit singles like It's Just Begun were out. Oh and Do the Hustle. (they didn't have beatboxes back then) Later on Hip Hop came along and they grabbed graffiti and put it into the mix. If you were not there, then you don't know the histroy. In any event, 5 points should stay to repersent Urnan Art. NY Style!

Peace, RZ1 ROC,
The points you raise are right on! No dispute, from a person engaged in the elements and culture since before the term Hip Hop was codified and accepted as such. From Brooklyn.
All of the elements existed prior and emerged independently of each other and etc. Long story for a blog, and you seem to know. However, I also know a pioneer "writer" from NYC train era, who would disagree that you call what he did urban graffiti, they were "writers" he would argue. So semantics aside. Global Block celebrates 5 Pointz as the UN of Hip Hop Culture. It is the Graffiti Mecca too... but its much more than that alone. Thank you for supporting its defense and preservation! In solidarity! 1

No doubt. Yes, this subject could be debated and there is always going to a voice or two that might see things in their own perspective. I would have to say the majority of first and early second generation writers would agree that graffiti as we know it was out before a lot of things. That's not to say "B-Boying" was not out either. Because it was. It just had a smaller audience at the time.

in any event. The bottom line is regardless if you are solely a graffer hip hoper, it is important to keep the memory of how it started, why it started and other key elements. It's also important. Because both hip hop and graffiti art, etc; are on a global scale. So, we need something permanent here in New York to keep the roots alive and also keep the flow going.

Peace~

I would like to help save 5Pointzs!!! It should be a protected site and receive government funding. Many graffiti writers are doing work in the community helping kids..voluntary xmen Ralphy, jef champion, sinxero, George Colon AIM etc etc its time the community gets something back!!!

Thanks for the wufoo info... I think the problem is that we have to use a city document as the primary application for landmark status.

RZI...right on point. Not only is it necessary to preserve the art form but its also necessary to correct, educate and re-educate people as we move forward through our place and time. Why? because if not, history will be rewritten and told from a completely bias point of view as most American historical facts are and have been for centuries.

Being graffiti was out way before the term Hip Hop was coined. Hip Hop is the last element of graffiti. In any event, we still need a permanent structure to keep the history alive.

I'm trying to fill out the application as requested, however as a PDF file I can not make any changes after I down load it. Please repost another link that might make this process a bit simpler. Many of us are ready to be mobilized into action- this is the time for action. Many thanks and I look forward to hearing back from you guys.
