“All Tribes Hip Hop Cultural Heritage Summit”, in Anchorage, Alaska.
The summit will offer a unique opportunity for Alaskan youth to understand and experience the cultural heritage and creative traditions of Hip Hop while discovering new ways to express their own cultural heritages.
The inaugural 1 day summit will run between 9am and 4pm and host up to 200 participants and be held at the Begich Middle School. Programming will consist of morning lectures/ discussions, afternoon creative breakout workshops, an evening concert, public art, giveaways and more. It will be led by internationally renowned cultural bearer George Martinez Jr. and master artist bboy legend The Real Alien Ness with the support of local artists/culture bearers including, DJ Reggie Ward, D1, Snap One, Samuel John, Kima Hamilton, Bisco and more.
Hip Hop as a tool for youth engagement has a successful history in Alaska, providing creative opportunities and inspiration to many from the city to the bush. Participants will gain greater cross-cultural understanding, increased self-awareness and be inspired to explore new ways of expressing their own cultural heritages while valuing others.
The "All Tribes Hip Hop Cultural Heritage Summit" is made possible through a mini-grant by Rasmuson Foundation through the Youth Cultural Heritage Fund, which is administered, under contract, by the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Additional support was made possible by Bering Straits Native Corporation and MECAC.
