Ask yourself, what would it take to provide a jump start to an entire community in one shot, that leads to a healthy sustainable future for all the members of the community?
We believe that sustainable community development is possible through holistic, creative and non-paternalistic approaches that incorporate Green Technologies, Social Programming, Accountability, and Research and Development.
The Global Block Sylvia Center for Black and Garifuna Culture is dedicated to empowering the Garifuna community through holistic approaches to sustainable individual and community development that are built upon the foundations of their traditional cultural wisdom. In Honduras, the Garifuna have lived a sustainable existence for over 212 years on the northern coast. Throughout which time they preserved their traditional knowledge and systems of education through their language/oral traditions, rituals, fishing, agricultural and other practices. In 2001, The Garifuna Language, Dance and Music were declared one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity a declaration that signifies the value and endangered status of their culture and knowledge.
As increased technological marginalization, poor health care, inadequate local education, high levels of unemployment and youth emigration negatively impact their communities, the loss of their ancestoral lands and culture are now visible in even the most isolated Garifuna community.
The GlobalBlockSylviaCenter works in the following action areas to address the needs of the Garifuna community:
1- Cultural and Social Preservation
2- Youth Educational and Technical Training Initiatives
3- Workforce/ Business Development
4- Health and Nutrition
5- Renewable Energy/ Green Infrastructure
